Angrboda wooden statue from oak

Angrboda is a figure from Norse mythology known as a giantess or jötunn, residing in the land of Jotunheim.

She is most famous for her union with Loki, the trickster god, from which three of the most fearsome beings in Norse mythology are born: the world serpent Jormungandr, the wolf Fenrir, and the half-dead, half-living Hel, who presides over the underworld.

Angrboda's name translates to "the one who brings grief" or "foreboder of sorrow," which is fitting given the destiny of her monstrous offspring, who play significant roles in the events leading up to Ragnarok, the end of the world.

Though not much is detailed about her in surviving texts, Angrboda is typically associated with foreboding, darkness, and the fearsome aspects of the natural world.
